After years of doing the right thing by separating our garbage so that our glass bottles, newspapers and plastics can be recycled, Victorians are now being told that all that recycling could be, well, a waste of time.

According to the Municipal Association of Victoria, a decision by China to place a ban on the import of recycling materials from outside the country has resulted in several councils having their recycling contracts cut back by our waste companies. If this continues, councils will have to stockpile millions of tonnes of waste or worse, dump it all in landfills.

While disposable food containers offer convenience and a safe and hygienic vessel for takeaway food, the kind made from conventional plastics are having a devastating effect on the planet. Thankfully, as support for the zero waste movement grows, and more people become aware of the principles of a circular economy, the need for a sustainable alternative to plastic food containers is clear: BioCane packaging made from rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp is the future.

Takeaway containers

When it comes to serving food to consumers on the go, disposable takeaway containers offer a convenient way to present the food both beautifully and hygienically.

But, not all takeaway containers are created equal, in fact conventional single-use containers like polystyrene clamshells and plastic takeaway containers, are made from fossil fuels. After a short useful life of approximately 20 minutes, conventional takeaway food containers will most likely end up in landfill where it will take decades to breakdown, releasing greenhouse gases in the process.

We offer eco-friendly options for takeaway food containers, made from rapidly-renewable, responsibly-sourced resources like sugarcane pulp, bioplastic, and sustainably-sourced paperboard. Plus, our clear bioplastic bowls and sugarcane pulp products are the first, and only, products of their kind certified to Australian/New Zealand commercial compost standards – AS4736.

Made from reclaimed and rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp – a by-product remaining after the juice has been extracted that would otherwise be burned – our range of sugarcane containers includes clam shellssquare containersrectangle containersbowls and sauce cups with lids.

Our sustainably-sourced paperboard range includes bowls with lidschip cupsboxes and traysnoodle boxeslunch boxes, and sandwich wedges.

Prefer clear takeaway containers? Our clear bowls with lids and sauce cups with lids are made from Ingeo™, a plant-based bioplastic. Producing these bowls results in 75 percent less greenhouse gases than the conventional plastic it replaces.

BioPak eco-friendly takeaway containers are either recyclable, or commercially compostable which reduces greenhouse gases, returns nutrients back to the earth and improves soil quality, and costs less than sending waste to landfill.

Where composting is not an option, many councils recycle paper takeaway packaging with other paperboard products. Alternatively, we offer our own composting service.
