OzHarvest CEO Cook Off

Charity events bring people together and make an enormous positive contribution to the community. However, whenever we gather together, waste is inevitably created and negative impacts on the environment must be considered and managed.

At events, the different types of food and drink served often have diverse and varied packaging requirements. Single-use packaging is often the most safe and practical solution for foodservice. Recycling is not always possible as food and drink residue contaminates the recycling stream.

The OzHarvest CEO Cookoff brings together business leaders, corporate teams and some of Australia’s top chefs to create a gourmet dinner for more than 1,400 vulnerable Australians. A more environmentally friendly packaging solution is required to support the great work of the OzHarvest team without harming the environment.

OzHarvest partnered with BioPak in a bid to eliminate plastic foodservice packaging at the event and replace it with compostable alternatives instead. At the 2019 CEO Cook Off, carbon neutral compostable foodservice packaging was used for food and beverages. OzHarvest and BioPak worked together collaboratively to assess the packaging requirements, and manage waste and the associated negative environmental impacts.

Partnering with BioPak, the festival team mandated that all catering partners and vendors use certified carbon neutral compostable packaging, which was collected after use and composted at a local facility.

Switching to compostable packaging is a simple step that makes a big difference. Especially at sporting events where large quantities of food and drink are consumed.BioPak supported the event by donating plates, bowls, cups and cutlery, as well as composting it after the event. Diverting over 140 kilograms of waste going to landfill.

Not only has the OzHarvest eliminated conventional plastic, by switching to certified compostable packaging they can move towards no waste. Compostable packaging and food scraps collected can be recycled the way nature intended: composting. In 8-12 weeks, it will become nutrient-rich soil food that can be used in farms and gardens around Australia.
