Ever wondered what the story was behind wooden cutlery? BioPak’s birchwood cutlery is FSC™ certified. This certification means the timber is sourced from responsibly managed plantations for the benefit of the environment and the community.
You may have seen the FSC™ logo before.
With so many single-use foodservice packaging products made from conventional plastics, it’s important that we choose to use renewable resources that don’t cost the earth. The hardest part is ensuring that those renewable materials are sourced in the most sustainable way.
That’s why we love the FSC™.
What is the FSC™?
The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) is an international non-profit that acts to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests, including the production of paper and wood materials.
Why should you care about forest stewardship?
- It is estimated that in 100 years, there will be no rainforests. (source)
- The Earth loses 18.7 million acres of forests per year, which is equal to 27 soccer fields every minute, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). (source)
- And it is estimated that 15 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation, according to the WWF.
Ensuring that wood is responsibly sourced from independently certified managed plantations and is able to be traced at each stage in the product life cycle is the only way to guarantee that the material is not contributing to environmental destruction or habitat loss. In short, responsible sourcing of raw materials is crucial for the sustainability of our forests.
Which is why we love FSC™ wood.
Why we work with FSC™ wood
FSC™ sets standards on forest products, along with certifying and labelling them as eco-friendly – both wood and paper can be certified to FSC™ standards.
An FSC™ certification ensures that the wood used in packaging is sourced from forests that are responsibly managed in the most environmentally sustainable way possible, including water and energy use, as well as the end product’s overall environmental rating.
At BioPak, we work with birchwood that’s FSC™ approved wood to make our wooden cutlery and chopsticks, which are home compostable and will biodegrade without harming or polluting the environment.
5 reasons we love FSC™ wood
Fight climate change
FSC™ works to combat deforestation, forest degradation and illegal logging in certified areas. Moreover, it is the organisation’s endeavour to grow the market for sustainable forest products and to highlight the dangers of poor forestry practice – measures which all help contribute to climate change mitigation.
FSC™ certification acts as a catalyst for improving standards in forest management, bringing economic benefits by ensuring social benefits to workers and local people, and facilitates environmental benefits for ecosystems.
FSC™ wood comes from responsibly-managed plantations
FSC™ certification vastly reduces the risk of being confronted with illegal timber. A growing number of countries and regions – including the European Union, USA and Australia – have legislation banning the trade and use of illegally harvested timber and derived products. For FSC™, respecting all relevant laws is the first of its ten principles and part of the certification and auditing process.
Thus, by being FSC™-certified, companies can demonstrate their commitment to an approach to business that considers social, financial and environmental factors.
Connect with consumers
FSC™ provides a link between the forest and the end-user. Its certification allows consumers to be confident that the products they are buying come from a responsible source. BioPak’s FSC™ birchwood cutlery and chopsticks are durable and are fantastic for enhancing trustworthiness and marketing possibilities for businesses.
