Wondering what FSC™ paper is? Learn more about the FSC™ and how they’re ensuring that paper and wood is eco-friendly and environmentally responsible.

You may have heard of FSC™ paper, or at least seen the logo on packaging. It looks like this:

With so many packaging products made from paper, it’s important to ensure our forests are not irreparably damaged in the creation of paper-based packaging. The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) is an international non-profit that acts to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

Why should you care about forest stewardship?

  • Paper accounts for 26% of waste in landfills (source)
  • The Earth loses 18.7 million acres of forests per year, which is equal to 27 soccer fields every minute, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). ) (source)
  • And it is estimated that 15 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation, according to the WWF

Ensuring paper is responsibly sourced from independently certified managed plantations, and is able to be traced at each stage in the production lifecycle, is a way to guarantee that the material is not contributing to environmental destruction or habitat loss.

Which is why we love FSC paper.

What is FSC™?

FSC™ sets standards on forest products, along with certifying and labeling them as eco-friendly – both wood and paper can be certified to FSC™ standards.

When it comes to paper used in packaging, an FSC™ certification ensures that the wood is sourced from forests that are responsibly managed in the most environmentally sustainable way possible, including water and energy use, as well as the end product’s overall environmental rating.

5 reasons we love FSC paper

1. FSC™ paper comes from responsibly-managed plantations

An FSC™ certification ensures that landowners use responsible forestry practices. This confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves the natural ecosystem and benefits the lives of local people and workers, all while ensuring it remains economically viable. (source).

2.Raise standards: FSC certification acts as a catalyst for improving standards in forest management.

It brings economic benefits by opening up new markets and helps ensure social benefits to workers and local people, and facilitates environmental benefits for biodiversity and ecosystems.

3. Connect with consumers: FSC™ provides a link between the forest and the end user.

Its certification allows consumers to be confident that the products they are buying come from a responsible source. FSC’s credibility is a great brand benefit, enhancing trustworthiness and marketing possibilities.

4. Fight climate change: FSC™ eliminates deforestation, forest degradation and illegal logging in certified areas.

Moreover it is the organisation’s endeavour to grow the market for sustainable forest products and to highlight the dangers of poor forestry practice – measures which all help contribute to climate change mitigation.

5. Get ahead of government requirements: FSC™ certification vastly reduces the risk of being confronted with illegal timber.

A growing number of countries and regions – including the European Union, USA and Australia – have legislation banning the trade and use of illegally harvested timber and derived products. For FSC, respecting all relevant laws is the first of its ten principles and part of the certification and auditing process. (source)

Thus, by being FSC-certified, companies can demonstrate their commitment to a triple-bottom-line approach to business.
